Sediment 0.33.0
A fresh install can keep its shelf in iCloud Drive and share it across your Macs, a right panel lists the shelf's tags beside the artifact, and Activity, Dismiss Notices and Share move to the function row.
What's new
- On a fresh install Sediment asks once whether to keep your shelf in iCloud Drive. Return keeps it there, in a Sediment folder iCloud Drive shows at its top level, and a second Mac signed in to the same account opens the same shelf on its first launch. Escape keeps it on this Mac, as before. An existing shelf is left exactly where it is and is never asked.
- When iCloud Drive cannot be reached, or the signed-in account changes, the shelf says so in a banner rather than quietly moving. The badge beside the Sediment wordmark reads iCloud, and Settings spells the folder the way Finder does.
- A right panel opens beside the artifact on ⌥⌘1 to ⌥⌘4, closed in every new window. Its Tags tab lists every tag on the shelf with its count, the selected artifact's tags tinted; a click opens that tag's collection, and a click on the collection you are in returns to the Shelf. Highlights, Comments and Links are placeholders for now.
- Activity, Dismiss Notices and Share are F1, F2 and F3. Each used to sit one modifier away from a frequent chord on the same key and was pressed by mistake. The old ⌥⌘0, ⌥⌘N and ⇧⌘C do nothing, and the shortcuts sheet says to hold fn with the three.
- A double-click on a sidebar row opens the artifact in a new window.
- An unread artifact's date is set semibold in the link colour beside its bold name.
- A tag that matches what you typed in Go to… is listed first, and ⇥ completes the highlighted tag.
Fixed
- Return closes the Keyboard Shortcuts sheet; Escape still does.
- ⇥ and ⇧⇥ stay in Go to…'s query field instead of leaving it.
- Choosing a folder whose files iCloud Drive has not finished delivering is refused with a message to try again shortly, instead of opening an empty shelf.
- Running the sediment command before the app has ever opened a window now says to open Sediment and choose where to keep the shelf, instead of deciding for you.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.32.0
A tag's collection can be saved to the sidebar's footer and opened with a chord, the line under the wordmark states facts while a key legend in the corner shows what you can press, and a first install comes as a disk image.
What's new
- Save Collection (⌘D) keeps the collection you are in as a row in the sidebar's footer. The first six take ⌘4 to ⌘9 by position, each chord drawn beside its tag. Move Collection Up and Down (⌃⌘↑ and ⌃⌘↓) or a drag reorder them, and ⌘D inside a saved collection removes it. The saved list travels with the shelf to your other Macs.
- The line under the Sediment wordmark states facts only: what is unread on the Shelf, and the Trash's size.
- A key legend in the bottom-right corner shows the chords that work right now: Restore in the Archive and the Trash, Delete Now in the Trash, and Save or Remove Collection and Show Shelf in a collection. The Shelf stays quiet, and notifications sit higher to clear the legend.
- A first install comes as a disk image beside the zip, and the app dragged out of it updates itself from then on.
Fixed
- A name pasted into the rename field with a line break in it is drawn on one line.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.31.0

The sidebar says where you are with a three-way place picker, a tag's collection spans the Shelf and the Archive, and the row marks say more at a glance.
What's new
- A place picker sits under the search field: Shelf, Archive and Trash, each with its count, the one you are in filled. It replaces the footer rows, and the line under the Sediment wordmark is now a remark about the place: what is unread on the Shelf, the Restore chord in the Archive and the Trash, and the way out of a collection.
- A tag's collection is a place of its own. Clicking a tag in Info or choosing one in Go to… shows every artifact carrying it, from the Shelf and the Archive alike, with the Trash's count beside the name. Any place chord or picker segment leaves it.
- An archived artifact's row mark is a short dash where a live one's is a dot, wherever the row appears, so a collection tells the two apart. The archive box glyph is gone.
- An unread artifact's mark takes the theme's accent colour beside its bold name, so the unread rows stand out down the list.
- The sidebar panel has a hairline edge in the theme's own tone, so it reads against the title strip and the window around it.
Fixed
- Designating a folder under iCloud Drive, Desktop or Documents no longer freezes the window while the system asks for permission. The folder watcher arms off the main thread, so the list, the page and the commands keep working, and the command line's find answers from the cache instead of timing out.
- Inside a collection, the count is the collection's whole size, not the part of it in the place you came from, and archiving or restoring a row there keeps the selection on it.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.30.0

An artifact can go out as a PDF of its whole page, and the sidebar is solid in the theme's ground instead of showing the desktop through it.
What's new
- Copy as PDF and Share as PDF… join the Share menu (⇧⌘C) and the File menu, beside Copy File and Share…. The PDF is the author's page at the width and zoom you are looking at, so a chat shows it inline where an .html attachment asks the recipient to open a file. A page with something the PDF cannot carry still gets its PDF, with a note naming what it may leave out.
Fixed
- The sidebar no longer shows the wallpaper through its panel. The top-left corner of the shelf took on the desktop's colour while the rest of the window was already solid.
- Pasting text that ends with a line break into the search field or Go to… keeps it on one line, so the query matches. Rename File takes the pasted name correctly on ↩, though its field may still draw an empty second line until you press ↩.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.

An artifact can open in its own window, so you can read one or two while you browse the list, and the sidebar names the place you are in and lets you open a tag's collection from Go to… or from Info.
What's new
- Open in New Window (⇧⌘↩, also in the Artifact menu and a row's context menu) shows the selected artifact's preview in a separate window, titled with the artifact's title, at the zoom the shelf had when it opened. The shelf keeps the keyboard and the selection; ⌘W closes the window, and moving the artifact to the Trash or deleting it closes it too. Asking again for an artifact that is already open brings its window forward.
- The line under the wordmark names the place you are in, with its count: Shelf · 42 · 3 unread, Archive · 5, Trash · 2 · 248 KB.
- A tag clicked in Info opens that tag's collection, an exact match, and the subheader reads Shelf › #design · 12. Choosing the place you are in leaves the collection; choosing another keeps it.
- Go to Artifact… is now Go to… (⌘E). A query that starts with # lists the tags of the place you are in with their counts, most used first, and ↩ on one lands on its collection.
Fixed
- With the sidebar hidden, ↩ in the description field now lands the keyboard in the page instead of stranding it.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.28.2
2026-10-04 · zip
The sidebar stays responsive on a large artifact, and the keyboard returns to the list after you edit a description.
What's new
- The sediment command’s help is layered: sediment on its own prints a short overview, and each command and topic has a page of its own.
Fixed
- Selecting a large artifact no longer freezes the sidebar. On a 10 MB artifact the list stalled for about a second at every landing, and again when the arrow keys passed over it.
- After ↩ or ⎋ in the description field, the arrow keys move the selection again with no click in between.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.

Moving between artifacts gets easier: each one reopens where you left it, Back and Forward retrace your steps, and the shortcuts sit where Finder and Mail keep them.
What's new
- Each artifact remembers where it was scrolled. Leave one and come back by any route and it opens on the passage you left, and it still does after a zoom change, a narrower window or a rewrite of its content. Closing the window or quitting forgets every spot.
- Back (⌘[) and Forward (⌘]) in the View menu walk the artifacts you stopped on: one you stayed on for a second, or scrolled. Each lands on the passage you left, and an artifact moved to Trash since is shown in the Trash.
- The Share menu reads Copy Link, Copy File, Share…. Copy File puts the artifact’s file on the clipboard, to paste into Finder, Mail or a message. Share… now sends the file instead of the link, so the person receiving it needs no Sediment to open it.
- The sediment command reports each artifact’s link in its answers to add, update and find, so a script can open the artifact it just found.
- Shortcuts follow Finder, Mail and Notes. In the Trash ⌘⌫ is Restore and Delete Now… is ⌥⌘⌫; in the Archive ⇧⌘A is Restore, so the shortcut that sent an artifact away brings it back. Rename File is ⇧⌘R, Toggle Sidebar ⌃⌘S, Open in Browser ⌘O, Go to Artifact ⌘E, Activity ⌥⌘0 and Reveal Shelf Folder ⌥⌘R.
- The toolbar above an artifact ends in the ribbon from Sediment’s logo.
Fixed
- With Info following the selection, the description is sized for the artifact it shows, and no longer keeps the last one’s height or scroll position.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.27.0
2026-09-30 · zip
Sediment has a look of its own: three themes drawn from its logo, a new set of type, and a choice of font for each kind of text.
What's new
- Three themes in Settings ▸ Appearance: Moss, Strata and Graphite, each in light and dark. A theme colours the whole window — backgrounds, text, the selected row, buttons, switches, the Info popover, Go to Artifact and the notices above an artifact — and never the artifact itself. Moss is the default.
- The Accent row gives way to the themes, and the System, Light and Dark choice is now called Mode. Adapt artifacts to mode keeps doing what it did.
- New type throughout: Space Grotesk for titles, names and buttons, IBM Plex Sans for descriptions, dates and counts, and IBM Plex Mono for file names, shortcuts and times.
- Choose the font for Headings, Text and File names in Settings ▸ Appearance, from any font on your Mac, with a sample line under the rows. File names offers fixed-width fonts only.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.

Every artifact now has a link that opens it in Sediment, and a Share button to hand that link on.
What's new
- Every artifact has a link of the form sediment://artifact/… that opens it in Sediment from anywhere a link can be opened: a note, a message, a document, a terminal. Sediment comes forward with the artifact selected, launching first if it was not running, and switches to the Archive or the Trash when that is where the artifact is. A link that names nothing on this shelf says so.
- A Share button sits beside Open. ⇧⌘C opens its menu with Copy Link highlighted, so ⇧⌘C then Return copies the link; Share… opens the share sheet with the link, headed by the artifact's title, for Messages, Mail, Notes, AirDrop and the rest. Share is also in the File menu.
- Go to Artifact reopens on the query it last closed with, selected, while the window stays open. Typing replaces it, → keeps it to refine, and one ⌫ shows recents again.
- Save Diagnostic Report… in the Help menu writes a zip of what Sediment has been doing, for attaching to an issue.
- The sediment command names each artifact's file path in its answers, and update --content replaces an artifact's content through Sediment rather than by writing the file, refusing when the artifact changed since it was read. Its help no longer invites editing a shelf file in place.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.24.0
2026-09-29 · zip
Sediment now updates itself, and a follow-up edit made on another Mac is no longer reported as a lost one.
What's new
- Sediment checks for a newer version once a day while a window is open, and Check for Updates… in the Sediment menu asks at once. The notes for the new version are shown before anything is installed, and nothing is installed until you say so.
- Two Macs that edit the same artifact are told apart from one Mac editing it twice. A follow-up made on another Mac is taken as the newer record; only a genuinely concurrent edit is reported as a loss.
- With the list holding the keyboard, J and K move the selection down and up, and ⌥J and ⌥K jump to the last row and the first.
- Refresh from Folder is ⌘R, and it ends a watching pause at once. The notice that names the pause offers the button beside its line.
- Activity says what each launch cost: how many artifacts were checked, how long the check took, and how long bringing the shelf up to date took.
- The Macs section of Settings sums itself up in one sentence under its title, with a dot that turns orange while deletions are waiting on a Mac.
Changed
- Rename File is ⇧⌘N, next to Edit Description on ⇧⌘D.
Fixed
- The Keyboard Shortcuts sheet is as tall as its longer column, so its title and Done button are no longer clipped.
- A Mac with no computer name is called Unnamed Mac from every seat, instead of This Mac from all of them.
- The sediment command tells its own timeout apart from Sediment closing the connection, and suggests waiting rather than a restart.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.23.0
2026-09-29 · zip
Notices now float over the preview instead of pushing it down, and a Mac you no longer use can be retired from a shared shelf.
What's new
- Notices sit over the top of the preview in two bands, one for the shelf and one for the selected artifact, so the page no longer jumps when one appears or leaves. The Trash band offers Put Back and Delete Now.
- Settings has a Macs section when more than one Mac shares the shelf. It shows when each Mac last opened the shelf and which deletions are waiting on it, and retiring a Mac you no longer use lets those deletions finish. A retired Mac that opens the shelf again counts again on its own.
- Activity names a Mac that has been quiet for 30 days while deletions are waiting on it.
- The Keyboard Shortcuts sheet shows every shortcut at once, in two columns, with the keys lined up.
Changed
- Menus, notices, Settings and the sediment command now use one name for each command and speak of artifacts and files. Every failure says who did it and what to do next.
- File sizes are shown one way everywhere, counted in thousands like Finder.
Fixed
- A damaged file no longer appears twice in a notice with two different counts.
- Two Macs whose notices read the same are no longer merged into one line.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
Sediment 0.22.0
2026-09-29 · zip
An artifact that syncs in from another Mac no longer turns into two copies of itself.
What's new
- An artifact still settling shows a clock badge, and the Info popover says what it is waiting for and which commands wait with it.
Fixed
- A file whose body arrives ahead of its metadata is held briefly rather than claimed outright, so one document stays one artifact across Macs. Previously it could be given a second identity that nothing could ever reconcile, and the original copy would go unread on the Mac that made it.
- The Dismiss button no longer appears on a notice it cannot clear.
- A notice that is still true no longer announces itself again when only its wording has changed.
Requires macOS 26.5 or later.
